We have lived in Las Vegas for 4 years and I still can’t believe we just barely made a visit to Zion, Utah! This is such an incredible National Park. The hiking is amazing and is for any level of experience. Even if you just want to walk around The Lodge. The RV park we stayed at was very nice & we have already made reservations to visit again this year. I have so much to say about this amazing trip. I hope you get some useful tips.
Days we stayed: 5 (3 full days)
Weather: 60’s at night
High 90’s during the day
Location: Zion River Resort
RV park & a few tent sites
14 miles outside of Zion National Park
Zion is about 2.5 hours from Las Vegas. It’s honestly so close I just keep wondering why it’s the first time we made it up there. On the way up, you drive through a decent size canyon. Doesn’t sounds like much but when you have a big trailer behind you, it’s pretty darn nerve-racking. From Las Vegas to Utah you pass through the corner of Arizona. As you can see in the picture.
We researched places to stay with our RV. We found 3 locations.
- Zion Camp Located right outside the park in the city of Springdale. It has a Quality Inn as well.
- Zion South Campground Located inside the park. No hookups & closed some times of the year.
- Zion River Resort Located 14 miles outside of the Zion entrance. Full hook-ups.
ZION RIVER RESORT
We stayed at the Zion River Resort. It is about 14 miles outside of the Zion Park entrance. I made reservations about 1 month out. We were lucky to get a premium corner river site. They have quite a few pull through sites but apparently the river sites (especially the corner sites) get snagged the fastest. I was nervous with the little one that she would be able to walk right down towards the river. But they have a decent size berm that they have built around the entire campground.
The campground is very clean and the staff are welcoming & friendly. When we checked-in they give you a site map, handy information about the weather for the week & any activities they host. They have a heated pool (not sure if it is in use year-round). And a nice social hall that we personally never saw anyone using. We didn’t see too many kids but there were quite a few dogs. Our little one was happy about that. Even though she scared half of them away with her loud squeals. Overall I would give the campsite an A+.
My FAVORITE hike I have ever done. So much information I had to make a whole blog post on it.
The first full day we did a hike through The Narrows. Click HERE to see details about it. Trust me, you will want to read or even look at photos from this amazing hike.
THE EMERALD POOLS
Funny story behind that trail. I am the type of hiker that loves to hike and make it to the end point. BUT as much as I love it I also complain during most uphill hikes. My poor husband is so understanding and is very good at making me feel better. So this hike wasn’t much different.
There are 3 stops. Lower Emerald Pools, Middle Emerald Pools, & Upper Emerald Pools. We made it to the top. The first 2 sections aren’t bed. But once you pass the Middle Emerald Pools is when it is a continuous set of steps. It is beautiful along the way so don’t forget to take a second and look out before you make it to the top.
Those were the two hikes we did during our stay. Our little one loves being outdoors and did such an amazing time being in the child carrier. I have to give a big shout out to my husband for doing both hikes with a 23lb toddler on his back. Our 13-year-old carried more weight than usual to help with Daddy’s usual load and did not complain once. I wish I could say the same.
LAVA POINT OVERLOOK ON UPPER KOLOB PLATEAU
This was a spontaneous venture off to an area we hadn’t heard of.
From where we were staying it was 25 miles (but 45 minute) drive up to almost 8,000 feet. It is not in the main Zion Canyon. There is also dispersed camping we saw along the way. It is a spectacular view overlooking Zion.
On the way down, we pulled off the road to this awesome rustic spot. I couldn’t pass up some good photography of the girls.
To cap off our nights we made some creative s’mores. I got the idea from pinterest.
Hope you enjoyed!
